Ok, here is the deal.

1. The doctors do NOT believe that Nicholas has pneumonia.
2. His trach aspirate contained a bacteria, but it has not been id'd at this point.
3. His trach was changed out to a neonatal 4.0, but he is still blowing quite a bit of air out his nose and mouth all the same.
4. The doctors determined that Nicholas was suffering this bit of set back because his old trach had a very, very, very large leak, and he was doing most of the venting and breathing on his own. It was determined that he tuckered himself out and just couldn't keep up with the whole act. Therefore, the new trach was put in today...maybe a bigger one tomorrow...we shall see.

Otherwise, Nicholas was successful at pulling on his IVs; therefore, the nurses and doctors have safety-pinned his arm to the bed. Poor baby!!!

He also had an upper GI performed today. According to the results, he does NOT have reflux, so the formula that they retrived was probably a one time thing. They have resumed feedings this afternoon.

In addition, I met with his nutrient specialist today. According to her, Nicholas is not receiving enough calories, so they are going to up his calories to 26-30 versus his 24 cal now. Look out...Nicky is going to get chubby!!!

Thanks for the prayers. Please continue to pray for Nicholas and his situation.

Much love,
Alex, Terah, and Nicholas

Just to update, Nicholas was transferred to the Children't Medical Center in Dallas. It now takes us an hour to get there to see him.

He has stablized and seems his happy self...with the exception of the doctors sedating him upon arrival at the hospital. They wouldn't let us seen Nicholas for the longest time. However, all the nurses and doctors are very nice and take lots of time to care for Nicholas.

Nicholas could be suffering from

1. pneumonia...yet again
2. reflux of formula into his lungs, and then an infection
3. his typical chronic lung disease

They are giving him antibiotics and changing out his trach to a different model. They feel that his current trach is junking up too much, and that the new trach that they are offering can much improve his oxygenation and ventilation to his lungs. He has more lung capacity than what he first was given.

Please keep us in your prayers...we want to come home!
