Hello all, Well, Nicholas had a little emergency yesterday afternoon. His heater is not producing temperatures warm enough for his little airways, so he coughed up a little goober into his trach which proceeded to clog his airway. Nicholas then proceeded to desaturate big time. The nurse and I worked quickly to remove his vent tubing, began bagging in oxygen from his large H-tank. Nicholas quickly recovered his oxygen in his body, but he did not recover once he was put back on the vent itself. The nurse quickly began baggin again. He was receiving air to his lungs; his lungs sounded clear. However, he was making a gagging motion with his mouth. We knew that he was having problems with thick secretions, so I gloved up and prepared the spare trach in his bed. The nurse bagged while I put in his new trach. We put him back on the vent...finally he accepted the vent and calmed down. If he had not stablized with the new trach, I was going to call 911. We looked at the old trach which was clogged with goobers. We had survived our first of many scary situations. I knew that problems like this can occur with a child on a trach and vent. I prayed that God would provide strength and knowledge of what to do. Within a second, God gave us the strength to push on and give Nicholas the care he deserved. Dr. Schochet, his lung doctor, changed some of the medications for his breathing treatments and placed him on an allergy medication. Nicholas has been having congestion and a running nose with sneezing over the past few days. Dallas has really had some bad ozone action days. I don't know if it would really affect him, but Alex and I have really suffered with our allergies and breathing. Today, Nicholas has been a different baby. His nose congestion is clearing, and he had a wonderful day. Keep those prayers coming and posts. We love seeing new messages daily. Much love, Alex, Terah and Nicholas |
